The Helis (HEalth and LIfe Sciences) Academy strives to optimise the health and life sciences sector in Flanders and the Netherlands.

Aims & mission

The mission of  the Helis Academy project, coordinated by, is to bridge the gap between the existing higher education and the health and life sciences labour market. Helis Academy focuses on developing and aligning appropriate trainings, internships and traineeships to improve the industry readiness of graduates and to facilitate the availability of required (bottleneck) profiles for the companies in the health and life sciences ecosystem. Through Helis Academy participants acquire complementary basic competences and skills, and learn how to put these in to use.

To achieve this the Helis Academy offers programmes in six different domains in health and life sciences to prepare students for labour market bottleneck profiles.

  1. Good manufacturing practices (GMP): During these hands-on GMP training courses the participants can develop their knowledge and skills in the field of aseptic methods, procedures and equipment.

  2. Clinical research: Clinical research is an important domain of health care sciences. Clinical trials are the main part of clinical research. In clinical trials the safety and effectiveness of new medicines, diagnostic products and medical devices are determined prior to release on the market.

  3. Data analysis & stewardship: The role of data analysis and data stewardship in life science fields will only increase, so you need to be ready! These courses offer you the chance to become industry-ready by providing hands-on lessons in four major pillars of data analysis and data stewardship: FAIR data stewardship, statistics, omics data analysis and machine learning.

  4. Business development: During an on-the-job development programme professionals in commercial roles will learn about topics such as negotiation, finance, intellectual property (IP), contracts, communication, company strategy.

  5. Technology & life sciences: Are you curious about the impact of (bio)technology on health (care) of humans, animals or plants? This applied training submerges you further in the professional world of (bio)technology.

  6. Product & process design: The HELIS Academy PDEng (Professional Doctorate in Engineering) Designer Programme trains and educates top level (inter)national MSc graduates to certified designers (PDEng degree) for key technological innovation positions in product and process design in the health and life sciences industry.
