Lab Supervisor

The Lab Supervisor closely assists the Technical Lead with the technical delivery of the project and leads and coaches a sub-team of the Mechelen R&D Lab resources.

Accountabilities

  • Is able to plan, prepare, perform and report complex scientific experiments or sets of experiments independently

  • Can help in determining the methodology and way of implementing the experiments and has insight in the main objectives of these experiments.  Make recommendations for the design and follow up of scientific experiments.

  • Finds solutions to any (unexpected) problem in a creative and scientifically sound way and continuously assesses way of working in relation to operational efficiency and project lead times.

  • Collects and analysis data and prepares appropriate summaries.  Prepares and writes reports and other documents that record and analyses data or results and presents data at departmental and other internal meetings.

  • Closely assists the Technical Lead with the organisation and prioritisation of workload in order to meet project goals, independently leads specific work package and/or small side-projects and acts as a back-up for the Technical Lead in his/her absence.

  • Keeps abreast with scientific developments related to own project and field.

  • Shares his/her expertise with others.

  • Leads a sub-team of lab resources (5-8 people) and is responsible for coaching, competence management and performance management within this sub-team.

  • Supports the Lab Operations Manager in planning and organising the overall lab competencies.

  • Defines processes and organises meetings to support functioning of his/her sub-team of lab resources including top-down and bottom-up communication.

  • Takes responsibility in general lab coordination.

  • Follows policies, SOPs and other applicable guidelines.

Profile requirements

  • Bachelor or Master in Sciences or equivalent by training/experience

  • A Master with minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience (strongly regulated Industrial lab setting) OR a Bachelor with minimum 8 years of relevant professional experience within a strongly regulated lab setting performing progressively advanced duties

  • Well-developed people management skills (at least 3 years of experience in a coordinating/people management role)

  • Thorough understanding of the technology relevant to the project and technical/scientific field

  • Works very independently

  • Can adapt methods by him/herself

  • Good communication & organisation skills

  • Good time management skills (assists with the organisation and prioritisation of project workload)
