Within BASF Seed and Traits R&D, plant cultivation refers to the growth of plants and the production of quality seeds in greenhouses and growth chambers. The Plant Cultivation group in Trait Research grows plants for crops such as wheat, soybean, oilseed rape and cotton, and produces and ships high-quality seeds for further evaluation in the greenhouse or in the field. The group operates and carries this responsibility at multiple locations around Gent.

Plant Cultivation aims at being highly experienced and predictable in workflow-based operational organization towards minimal cost and timelines, while also ensuring required quality, both at the level of purity as well as at the level of Plant Genetic Integrity. Plant Cultivation also aims at being state-of-the-art by identifying, developing, and implementing the latest technology and infrastructure.

Plant Cultivation is embedded in a research department that focuses on trait design, creation, and testing, and supports the testing of genetic engineering, genome editing and mutagenesis-based traits.

For the Plant Cultivation group in our R&D Innovation Center in Gent (Belgium), we are looking for a pragmatic, enthusiastic and inspiring Team Leader.

What You Can Expect

  • In this role, you will be part of the leadership of our Plant Cultivation group and support delivering on R&D projects at a competitive cost, speed, and quality.

  • As a Team Leader, you will run processes of people and team development, including performance management as well as career development and you will ensure that your team is compliant with all existing safety, stewardship, and quality standards.

  • You will contribute to forecasting human & financial resource requirements, infrastructure & CAPEX requirements and review resource demands and staff allocation to R&D projects in alignment with the Plant Cultivation Group Leader and in consultation with the Program Leaders.

  • Together with your team, you will be highly involved in technology development and platform innovation and/or in workflow-based operations for Plant Cultivation.

  • You will act as a role model with respect to ensuring compliance with the relevant company standards (Quality, Health, Safety, Stewardship, …).

  • Location: Astene (Deinze)


  • You have a master’s degree in Life Sciences (or equivalent through experience) with a minimum of 5 years of research experience in relevant aspects of plant cultivation.

  • You have multi-year experience in developing and coaching research & pipeline teams, including people management.

  • You are known for your pragmatism, hands-on mentality and strong team leadership and social skills.

  • You have experience in workforce planning and prioritization.

  • In your field of expertise, you are able to keep abreast of new developments and convert these into technical innovation plans and expertise innovation strategy contributions.

  • You can advise on research project strategy by providing technical input.

  • You have an innovative mindset in process/efficiency improvement.

  • You have strong networking skills and you are able to interact and cooperate with stakeholders on different levels in an organization.

  • You have strong communication and presentation skills.

  • You have advanced computer skills and affinity for specialized software and databases.

  • You are fluent in Dutch and English, both orally as well as in writing.
