Laboratory Technician

12/11/24

Location

Antwerp, Belgium

Vacancy

The Laboratory for Gut-Immune-Brain Axis Research is a newly established and expanding research group led by Dr. Sebastiaan De Schepper. The lab focuses on how the peripheral immune system shapes the brain immune landscape in health and disease, with a particular emphasis on tissue-resident macrophages along the gut-brain axis. We use various transgenic mouse models in combination with immunophenotyping tools and -omic techniques to uncover the molecular mechanisms through which the gut-immuno-brain axis can contribute to neuropathology.

We are seeking a motivated Lab technician to support the establishment of our laboratory, designing the space layout and the setup of key research infrastructure. The candidate will play an essential role in the initiation and management of mouse colonies, conducting experiments, and ensuring smooth day-to-day lab operations. The candidate may be assigned responsibility for a specific research project.

The lab technician should have a (professional) Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in, immunology, molecular biology, neuroscience, cell biology, biochemistry, biomedicine or related disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning, setup and organization of the laboratory, including procurement and maintenance of equipment and consumables.
  • Establish, monitor, and maintain mouse colonies, including breeding, genotyping, and record-keeping.
  • Perform laboratory experiments, including handling and processing of biological samples, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and molecular biology techniques.
  • Contribute to various new research projects, with the potential to be responsible for a specific project.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate lab records, protocols, and data in compliance with established standards.
  • Adhere to all laboratory safety guidelines and animal welfare regulations.

Profile

Essential requirements

  • A professional Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in neuroscience, immunology, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, biomedicine, or related disciplines.
  • Background or strong interest in neuroimmunology, immunology, and/or the gut-brain axis.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with an ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Since the candidate will be involved in experiments with laboratory animals, you will need at least FELASA B certificate. Prior experience in animal handling, particularly with mice, and familiarity with colony management.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in laboratory techniques relevant to immunology or neurobiology.
  • Attention to detail, willingness to learn, and a proactive approach to problem-solving skills.

Desirable qualifications

  • Previous experience with transgenic mouse models, including genotyping and breeding strategy design.
  • Hands-on experience with immunophenotyping tools (e.g., flow cytometry, immunofluorescence) and/or -omic techniques.
  • Familiarity or interest with neurodegenerative disease models or related research areas.

What we offer

  • The opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research in an inspiring, supportive and international environment.
  • Full-time position with an open-ended contract
  • Hospitalization insurance
  • Pension plan
  • If you come to the lab by public transport; full reimbursement
  • If you come to the lab by bike; bike allowance of €0.27/km
  • Eco-cheques
  • Internet fee
  • Closing week between Christmas and New Year
  • Access to cutting-edge technologies and techniques in neuroimmunology
  • Professional development through regular mentorship, training opportunities, and collaborative projects.
  • A competitive salary package and a stimulating work environment within the VIB-Center for Molecular Neurology.
