For our location at the University of Hasselt campus in Diepenbeek, Belgium, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Molecular Biologist to join our team in the field of plant molecular farming. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in biochemistry and molecular biology, with a focus on plant-based heterologous expression systems. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research and development in the production of valuable proteins and compounds through plant-based systems.
Responsibilities:
Conduct experiments to optimize transient expression systems for the production of heterologous proteins in various plant species.
Design and execute molecular biology protocols, including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, cloning, and transformation.
Perform standard protein purification and analysis techniques, such as SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, and ELISA.
Maintain plant tissue culture and transformation facilities, ensuring proper growth conditions and sterility.
Collaborate with researchers and scientists to troubleshoot experiments and develop innovative solutions.
Train and supervise new colleagues in laboratory techniques and procedures.
Maintain accurate records of experimental procedures, results, and data analysis.
Stay updated on the latest advancements in plant molecular farming and contribute to scientific publications, IP generation, and presentations.
Requirements:
Qualifications:
A minimum of a Master's degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Plant Biotechnology, or a related field.
At least 3 years of relevant work experience in a research laboratory setting, with a focus on plant molecular farming.
Proficiency in molecular biology techniques, including DNA manipulation, PCR, cloning, and sequence analysis.
Experience with transient expression systems in plants with emphasis on agroinfiltration or vector design (viral and/or binary-based).
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot experiments independently.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Effective communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with a diverse team of scientists and researchers.
Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and procedures.
Preferred Skills:
Experience with protein extraction and purification techniques.
Knowledge of plant tissue culture techniques and transformation methods.
Familiarity with bioinformatics tools for sequence analysis and protein design and prediction.
Experience working with genetically modified plants and agrobacteria, and regulatory compliance.
Experience in the configuration of Design of Experiments (DoE’s)
