Vacancy

KU Leuven, located in Belgium, is among the top European universities and conducts both basic and applied research. Within KU Leuven, the Faculty of Engineering Technology organizes bachelor and master degrees in Engineering Technology on six campuses across Flanders, Belgium. This vacancy is situated at campus Diepenbeek at the intersection of the research groups DistriNet (expertise in secure and distributed software engineering) and ACRO (expertise in robotics, computer vision, and automation).

Project:

The traditional, isolated environment of industrial installations is rapidly evolving towards always-connected Industry 4.0 facilities, which comes with opportunities but also with serious security risks. Your goal in this PhD project is to improve the resilience of Industry 4.0 systems through the development of innovative technologies to design and monitor systems and respond to potential threats. In particular, based on existing or newly collected datasets, you will investigate how the notion of a digital twin can be leveraged to accomplish this through simulation, real-time monitoring and analysis.

Profile:

  • You have a master’s degree in engineering (computer science, informatics, or equivalent)

  • You possess background knowledge of secure software engineering and/or industrial control systems

  • You master at least two programming languages, including one statically typed object-oriented language

  • You are capable of balancing in-depth analysis and knowledge gathering with working towards a practical solution

  • You like challenges and devising and experimenting with solutions

  • You can work autonomously and proactively, are well-organized, and have an eye for detail

  • You have a no-nonsense, hands-on mentality

  • You can fluently express yourself in English, both spoken and written

Offer:

You will be offered a PhD scholarship to become part of our team to work towards your PhD. This full-time mandate is initially limited to 1 year contract with a possible extension depending on your performance as well as the acquisition of competitive financing. The final goal is to obtain a PhD after 4 years.

Your work location will be on campus Diepenbeek. Next to the research within your PhD project, you will contribute to the education of our students by supporting lectures, lab sessions, and master theses, for example.
