To strengthen our valuable team of dedicated employees in Belgium, Biotalys is looking for a Scientific Data Engineer.

 

Scope of your job

As a Scientific Data Engineer, your primary role will be to enhance and expand the company’s scientific data management landscape. You will leverage both IT technical expertise and collaboration skills to ensure efficient data handling and help foster a data-driven culture. Acting as an ambassador for best practices and procedures in scientific information management, you will play a crucial role in unlocking the value of data and supporting the company’s mission.

 

Your key responsibilities :

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the scientific process data management system based on Genedata Biologics and Bioprocess.

  • Train employees on data management tools and best practices.

  • Collaborate with scientific teams to facilitate dataset uploads.

  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes and drive efficiency through software development, scripting, and database configuration.

  • Provide support for additional scientific data management tools.

  • Contribute to the expansion of the scientific data management landscape through analysis, discussion, and scouting of new technologies.

 

What we are looking for

As this is a multidisciplinary role combining Biotech and IT, candidates can come from one of the following backgrounds:

  • BSc, MSc or Engineering degree in Biology, Biotechnology or other Life Sciences, with a solid understanding of information management concepts in Biotechnology.

  • MSc in Software Engineering or related IT disciplines, with a strong interest in Biotechnology and at least 3 years of relevant experience in Ag/Biotech. 

Desired Qualifications and Skills:

  • Biotech Data Insight: Familiarity with and interest in the complexities and challenges of the biotech data landscape, with a keen eye for identifying opportunities for improvement.

  • Lab Process Translation: Experience in converting lab processes (e.g., assays) into effective data management pipelines.

  • Data Management Expertise: Ability to build and support a diverse biotech data management landscape that integrates commercial and company tools across varying technologies.

  • Technology Agility: Broad technical knowledge preferred over deep specialization. Flexibility to work with various technologies, switching between them easily.

  • Bonus Skills: Knowledge of data modelling, Python, SQL, Java, R (Shiny), JavaScript (low code, frameworks), Linux, VBA.

  • DevOps Familiarity: Understanding of version control, CI/CD, containerization, and virtualization is a plus.

  • Problem-Solving Mindset: Proactive, hands-on, with a critical approach to challenging the status quo.

  • Analytical and Detail-Oriented: Strong analytical abilities with a focus on quality, accuracy, and attention to detail.

  • Communication and Reporting: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, both internally and externally.

  • Team Collaboration: Ability to motivate, persuade and enable teams while collaborating effectively across organizational and functional boundaries.

  • Eagerness to Learn: Quick to pick up new skills, with a passion for continuous learning as part of the job.

  • Language Proficiency: Fluent in written and spoken English.
